On behalf of Debbie, I would just like to convey our grateful thanks and appreciation, to you, Andrea, the SQH team and the many very good sub-contractors that you managed and co-ordinated to build our house, which is now our home in the magnificent setting of Knysna.

Designing and building a home is universally accepted as a stressful process, ours made more complicated by the fact that we needed to do it from afar, however right from the onset the establishment of a forthright trustworthy relationship with a clear understanding of how the process would work was a great foundation (excuse the pun) to managing this project under these circumstances. You and your team did not disappoint, and process of building was not as stressful as anticipated, you should take much credit for how you manage your clients and your projects.

In addition, it is necessary also to make special mention of Andrea’s contribution with regards to managing the important administration and financial management of the project, always on time, accurate and concise and any queries swiftly dealt with, another practice and process that eliminates unnecessary stress.

The outcome is a home that was delivered on time, and has exceed our expectations, the odd issues that needed attention post completion were insignificant, swiftly dealt with, a testament to the name of your company – well done!

My experience as a Frenchman with all the team from SQH was wonderful. I would really recommend them to somebody who would like to build. The house is beyond my expectations.

It seemed to me that it would not be simple to build when you live 10 000 km far away, but in fact it can be. I have heard so many times about people who have had a bad experience when they built their house but, together with the architect Nick Olivier and Nick’s wife (who is an interior designer), they created a great job.

I particularly appreciated that without telling me they took the best options where there were some problems and they made some nice finishings that I did not know about it.

Lastly I would say that they are really pleasant people. In the harsh world we live in, it is very much appreciated.

After living abroad for many years, it was time to think about coming home to South Africa again. Our plan was to purchase a home somewhere on the Garden Route, rather than land with a view to build. A previous build, ten years before at Pecanwood Golf Estate in the North West had gone badly wrong due our unfortunate involvement with a wholly unethical building contractor. So it was a case of “once bitten, twice shy!”

When we weren’t able to find a suitable home within our budget, I reluctantly agreed with my wife on the purchase of a spectacular piece of land at Pezula in Knysna. Layout and architectural design commenced in 2019, after we’d met with Nick Olivier, a Knysna based architect. Fairly soon the question of a contractor raised its head, something we approached with obvious trepidation!

Nick had mentioned Ron Godfrey and SQH a number of times, having worked with him on previous projects and ensured us that he had a solid reputation. We had a list of a few other options, but Nick suggested a meeting with Ron. This took place towards the end of 2019, Sheryl and I both took an instant liking to Ron and his frank and straightforward manner.

We arrived back in South Africa early 2020, only to find ourselves now negatively affected by all the fallout from Covid-19. The rest of the architectural design took place electronically with us stuck in the NW province. Once Ron received the final plans, he came up with a project costing, based on his extensive knowledge of quantities and local pricing. When we enquired about a building contract, Ron informed us of his preference to take the project on without a contract as such, and rather proceed on a “cost-plus” basis. With lockdown restrictions over and our house at Pecanwood sold, we moved to Knysna in October 2020 and commenced with the build at Pezula in November 2020.

The “cost-plus” basis is Ron’s preferred operating structure and it gave us great visibility wrt what our money was spent on. In essence, every single invoice, be it for a tin of paint or a large payment in excess of R200k for concrete was collected by SQH and then sent to us at month’s end throughout the one-year build period, together with their monthly reconciliation and markup costs. We knew down to the last cent where our money had been spent, be it on materials, sub-contractors or labour.

SQH operates like a well-oiled machine, with Ron at the “coalface”, his wife Holly running all the accounts, ably assisted by their admin assistant Andrea. On a build of our magnitude there were hundreds of individual invoices, not a single error was made by mistakenly apportioning an invoice from another project to us.

More about Ron:
An extremely capable builder/project manager, with a background in Civil Engineering and close to thirty years of building experience. Resourceful, resilient, flexible, energetic, honest and trustworthy are just a few adjectives to aptly describe him. Both Sheryl and I got on incredibly well with him during the complex build on our sloped stand, we never came even close to having an argument of any sorts, which I honestly believe is rare in this environment.

I was not working at all in 2021, as such I was on site a lot, the ever-present Ron was always welcoming and involved me in many facets of the build process. Furthermore, he has extensive knowledge of all the local sub-contractors and suppliers and as such is able to pick out and recommend the best. A keen eye was used to dissect many quotes, with Ron negotiating best prices throughout. Some engineering requirements drove prices up unavoidably, as an example an adjusted final invoice for extensive formwork seemed a little high, Ron wasn’t happy and spent a considerable amount of his own time to reduce this large cost to us.

Ron has a very keen eye for design, detail and especially for levels, important qualities for a good builder. Our house was planned on three levels as it “stepped” down the slope of our stand, Ron suggested early on in the process to lift the bottom level a little; in the end it made a huge difference to our view and also reduced the amount of steps between the living and sleeping areas of the house. Very often, his input and suggestions wrt design were implemented, always to a most beneficial effect.

Ron’s communication skills are exceptional, with continual, almost daily updates via whatsapp photos and videos, explaining progress or making informed suggestions.

The finished product speaks for itself; friends, relatives and neighbours are in awe of our home, as are we! A picture paints a thousand words, there is a brilliant set of photos under the Portfolio tab.

Once the house was complete and with the inevitable snagging list generated by us, every single snag has been rectified. We have absolutely no hesitation in recommending Ron Godfrey and SQH. He is a trustworthy and extremely reliable person and as mentioned in other references on this site, it’s not very common to develop and maintain a lasting friendship with your contractor; we certainly have!

We engaged with SQH early in 2020 to get started on a building project in Sedgefield.

We enjoyed the practical approach Ron took with the project from the go. We were very impressed with their planning and the way they managed the flow of the project. They were able to start with the earthworks engineering while the plans were with the municipality for consideration and they aligned the project plan with the approval date in order to kick the project off at the earliest time. Our site manager has excellent communication and technical skills and kept us informed every step of the way. Nothing was ever too much trouble. We really enjoyed working with him.

We were very impressed by the highly skilled artisans that worked on our project. The quality of the construction and products that were used, end-to-end is excellent!

The team often came up with many innovative suggestions to contain cost and have long term benefit such as adding a spike, gas geysers with a solar holding tank and water tanks reservoirs.

The project was successfully delivered on time within the agreed budget. The administration team manages the invoices and keeps track of the actuals vs budget. A comprehensive financial report is submitted each month.

We had an open and trusting relationship with SQH and had fun building our house with them.

We bought a stand in Westford Bridge in late 2018 of a house that was victim to the Knysna fires of 2017. The stand had a garage and a swimming pool that survived. The design process was complete by end of May 2019.
We realized from the onset that our project would pose various challenges as we are working and living abroad and would have to heavily rely on our Contractor. Our goals and expectations revolved around time, cost and quality.
Time: We awarded the contract to SQH in mid-June 2019 with the expectation that the house would be complete around 13 December 2019 for our annual holiday in South Africa. Ron commenced work on 19 June 2019 and provided us with a detailed programme of the work. The programme was very tight with very little room for error. Not only did Ron complete the house ahead of schedule, but he was able to provide us with a Municipal Occupation Certificate on 03 December 2019, complete with all documentation in compliance with regulations, ordinances, etc. As a bonus the landscaping was also complete. Indeed, a remarkable achievement!
Cost: SQH offered us an innovative approach to the cost of the project. We agreed on a “cost-plus” contract whereby we had complete control over the cost and the budget. All transactions were transparent and auditable and thus we knew the cost of every element before it was done. During the process Ron made various suggestions that saved us money and we were able to stretch the budget. The end result was that the project was completed within our budget and we actually achieved more than initially planned. Again, Ron exceeded our expectations by far.
Quality: Not too much comment here, except for WOW! SQH’s attention to detail was phenomenal and the quality craftsmanship is evident. We really felt that we received incomparable value for money.
Ron and Holly were such a pleasure to work with, were always honest in their dealings with us and kept us up to date with the progress, even realising that we were 8,000 km away from our home. We will always recommend Ron with the accolades that SQH deserves.

Despite having been involved in construction and creative work around buildings all my life, the building we asked Ron to help with was not one we had taken on by choice.

However, having Ron (SQH) managing the project made it a pleasure.

Ron managed to introduce many helpful, creative, practical components into the structure and finishes which we would not have thought of ourselves.

And with Ron, it was always easy to work out solutions to issues which inevitably crop up on a building project.

All the way, we felt we were getting value for money.

When our house burned down in the Knysna fire in June 2017, we followed the recommendation of a friend and contracted SQH to do the rebuild. From start to finish the whole process was handled with complete professionalism and efficiency.

Fearing a scarcity of building materials, as so many homeowners would be re-building, Ron immediately started purchasing all the necessary materials and organising the labour. We were one of the very first to re-build in Knysna and did not suffer from a lack of building materials, as many others did. Building Keerweder was not straightforward - it involved lengthy issues with local planning departments, demolition of the major part of the old house and a tricky site. With all this in mind, Ron and his team were on board from day one. Holly was always available to deal with any administrative queries and Ron and Brema literally bent backwards to create a holiday home that we love. We had weekly site meetings with Ron - he is a master in overcoming on site challenges. The team of contractors that they use were really fantastic. Throughout, Ron took responsibility for this project and went beyond the call of duty to ensure that the standard of the build and finishes were even higher than we had hoped for.

When we made the life changing decision to leave the hustle and bustle of Jo'burg, and move to our family’s lifelong holiday destination in Sedgefield, we were sure we would be able to buy an existing home that we could tweak to become our perfect easy living home at the sea. However after spending countless hours looking at houses that were on the market, and being shocked at the massive price difference between Jo'burg and the Garden Route, we realised that this was not going to be possible. Our requirements were simple, or so I thought, corner stand, large open plan living on a single level with enough room for everyone and everything …… and off course on a shoestring budget.

We met with various reputable builders in the area and finally decided on Ron Godfrey of Sedgefield Quality Homes, and what a good decision that turned out to be. Ron assisted us in all aspects of the build, starting at NHBRC and Municipal approvals, through to stand levelling, building, roofing, painting, finishing and even some landscaping. We were on a very tight budget and Ron was more than willing to work with us to accommodate that by giving suggestions on possible savings to even passing on discounts he received from suppliers. Ron also had no problem with us sourcing our own contractors when it came to finishes such as kitchen cupboards, plumbing and electrical to try and save costs were ever we could. He even put up with my constant interference in the project on a daily basis. Although we were located here in Sedgefield while the build took place, after dealing with Ron I would be more than happy to have still been living in Jo'burg and having him manage the project for me.

Now after being in our house for nearly two years I can tell you that the quality of work that Ron and his team did is phenomenal. We have no issues and the couple of small snags that were present after the build in the initial period were dealt with swiftly and efficiently. I can highly recommend Ron Godfrey from Sedgefield Quality Homes if you are looking to build a house in the area.

Having decided to retire to Sedgefield from Cape Town we decided to build. We were fortunate that we were recommended to contact Ron Godfrey the owner of Sedgefield Quality Homes (SQH).

Building a house is stressful, building while 450 kms away is more so. However, SQH took that stress away. Their knowledge of the local environment from soil types to suppliers was of huge benefit to us.

Having finalised the building design and project plan, we were impressed with the professionalism shown. During the building phase, delivery milestones were adhered to along with high quality of workmanship. During impromptu visits to site we always found strict supervision.

Despite us changing certain designs during the build, Ron's advice and attention to detail enabled us to build the house to our satisfaction and, most importantly, within budget.

We used SQH to do building additions, as well as major alterations. Ron and Holly run an extremely professional and hugely successful business. SQH has been operating for 27 years, and that in itself bears testimony to the reliability, quality and experience of the company. Ron is a highly qualified Civil Engineer with years of experience in all areas of building. He is very knowledgeable in every aspect of the trade, and his attention to detail needs to be commended. He was always available immediately on his phone.

Our first experience of SQH was when they were building the house next door. The owner had started his home, but ran out of money, and so the building was left at foundation level, in a dreadful mess. A few years later, the property was sold and Ron was set the difficult task of picking up the pieces and continuing to build this enormous house. In short, Ron and his team worked tirelessly around the clock to complete this massive construction. We watched the commitment of SQH, as they worked up until Christmas Eve, so the owners could enjoy their holiday in a completed home.

We found this same dedication when we did our addition and alterations. SQH employs a team of highly skilled artisans, with a most pleasant disposition. Nothing was ever too much trouble and his workmen took huge pride in their work. They cleaned up meticulously at the end of every day. They were reliable and honest. Ron always used products and materials of a high standard and good quality. The work was always well supervised.

SQH had the mammoth task of under pinning our foundations in a particular area. The job was completed timeously and to our utmost satisfaction. The garden and lawn that were removed in the process, were carefully put back as if nothing had ever happened.

SQH also laid a large amount of decking around our pool. This was a very tricky and complicated job, but once again, was carried out in an exemplary manner. The carpenter was very experienced and greatly skilled.

We would highly recommend SQH to anyone thinking of building a home or doing alterations. They surpassed our expectations in all their work.

Renovating and extending a 1920’s Cape Dutch style heritage property was not easy – Sedgefield Quality Homes and their team renovated and extended our historical property, that is likely to be there for the next 100 years or more.

Once all the building plans and permits were authorised, they got on with the job at hand. Our advice to 'new builds or restoring a historical property' would be to get the full planning and building authorisations in place 1st and make sure a detailed project plan is agreed on. This makes for efficient working and timely completion.

Hi There,

It would be an honour to give a testimonial of the renovation work done by Sedgefield Quality Homes.

It was an extremely daunting task that lay ahead, whereby an old house which saw very little maintenance had to be transformed into upmarket offices in little over 3 weeks.

I knew from the word go, I could only achieve this near impossible task with the help of Ron Godfrey and Sedgefield Quality Homes.

Against all odds, we achieved the deadline for us to be able to move in, which was achieved through many people working longer hours and weekends to achieve this goal.

From a costing point of view, SQH was extremely accommodating and reasonable and without all the cost saving tips, without compromising quality, I do not think we would have managed to get such a top quality finished product.

The staff of SQH were fantastic to deal with and most pleasant.

The renovation of our office building was a positive experience and I would highly recommend the services of SQH, without reservation.

Hope this is in order and should anyone would like to come and have a look at the finished product, I would be very proud to show it off to them.

Ron renovated our house in Sedgefield during 2012. It was a pleasure working with him on this project. The quality of the construction and finishes were excellent. His administration of the whole process was faultless. The project was completed in the time frame estimated by him. The costing of the project was done very well and all expenses were set out clearly. We live in Gauteng and Ron sent us pictures of the project as it went along. He has a number of excellent sub-contractors that he recommended.

After quite a prolonged period appointing my builder, I chose Ron because I met him on various sites he was building and observed his work carefully. It was very difficult to decide who to appoint to build such a large house, especially as I was living in the UK at the time. Ron’s sites were tidy, organised and most importantly his supervision and dedication was very good.

Previous customers seemed very happy and he took an interest immediately in the design plans and shared his thoughts on the construction process required. He is a qualified engineer and has the experience of managing quality builds to this scale and larger. I did not have to deal with any hidden surprises and always found Ron to be very obliging indeed.

During the construction Ron was onsite every day which was imperative and the house was completed to a high standard. A year after the build, Ron has always made himself available to attend to minor repairs which I find very reassuring. Having bought a piece of property on the beachfront in Myoli Beach, Sedgefield, we approached a number of builders in the area showing them our plans of what we would like to have built. After speaking with them, we found that Ron Godfrey of Sedgefield Quality Homes had incredible ideas regarding aspects that would enhance our home. It was clear from his advice to us (and from the clients Ron had previously built for) that SQH was the company we needed to employ to build our home.
Throughout the continuation of the project, we found Ron to be readily available, dedicated to the project and an exceptionally honest person.
Despite the time constraints on the project, SQH handed over the house on time and built to the highest of standards. We can only attribute this impeccable quality of work received to the fact that Ron has incredible attention to the smallest of detail in design, as well as a natural instinct in knowing what the best way forward is (whilst always bearing in mind what the client wants).
Not only can we compliment SQH for their efficiency, professionalism and feedback, but this is all provided to the client at a highly competitive and affordable price. They really do give a client value for money.
It should also be noted that I was not a Sedgefield resident when the project was being built, so I had to choose a builder that I knew I could trust. Ron’s site supervision and project management made it easy for me to leave Ron to build my house, knowing that I was getting the best product I could ask for, down to the last detail. He also kept me up to date with regular emails and photographs.
I would also like to compliment SQH for always being there when I need them, even once the project had been completed. I contracted SQH to build my home for me in 2005, and on numerous occasions since then, they have attended on my site for maintenance work (which is a blessing when one considers what living so close to the coastline does to a property).
I have also effected small additions and alterations in the last year or so, and I would not have thought to hire anyone else for the work.
Needless to say, I would recommend SQH and Ron Godfrey to any client, for any project – big or small.

We viewed various houses that Ron Godfrey (of Sedgefield Quality Homes) had constructed in Sedgefield and Pezula, and after recommendations from a number of the owners, we contracted Ron Godfrey to build our home on the Pezula Private Estate. The choice of an experienced, reliable builder was extremely important, as our house was to be built on a difficult site.

In addition, the house required intricate engineering, with the use of reinforced concrete and structural steel work, which included large double volume areas and exposed glass. With Ron’s Civil Engineering background, we felt confident that he had the know-how and experience to complete the house to the required specifications and standards. The choice of a competent builder was very important to us. We were building our dream home and also investing a considerable sum of money in the project. We could not afford to make a mistake in the selection of the construction company.

Throughout the construction period (which took approximately 14 months to complete) we found Ron to be extremely hard-working, reliable and honest. He was very accommodating and his attention to detail and site supervision was excellent.

The house was completed in time and we are extremely pleased with the result. In summary, Ron’s experience, project management skills and professionalism made the project an absolute pleasure. I would recommend him as a builder (especially on large, intricate projects) to anyone.

When we decided to build our house in Sedgefield we decided to place it on tender and we received 6 tenders.

We proceeded to research the companies that tendered and a name that constantly came up was Ron Godfrey of Sedgefield Quality Homes. We also went to look at homes that these companies had built and were building. Ron's homes stood out head and shoulders above the rest. Having considered the quotes, the referrals and actual work done we decided to approach SQH to build our house for us on a project management basis.

Ron took care of the whole project from site preparation to finishing and he even assisted in hanging our pictures when we moved in. We found that his planning and attention to detail was meticulous which meant the house was completed with almost no wasted time or costs. Because the project was undertaken on a cost plus basis we were involved in getting estimates on many of the items - most of the time however, Ron was able to secure better pricing for us.

SQH also kept accurate record of all the procurement that took place on the project with fortnight reports on all expenses per supplier as well as the running totals. This made it easy to keep track of the budget and where we were over or under spending.

Soon into the project we realized Ron takes personal pride in his workmanship and doesn't just consider it to be a job. Ron is SQH and most people will tell you their house was built by Ron Godfrey and not by SQH. The way he deals with his customers it is easy to understand why he becomes their friends. It is rare to find people like this in the building industry today.

We are now also one of the few who can proudly say we have a 'Ron Godfrey' home. We are sure to make use of SQH should we build again or have any alterations that need to be taken care of. We can also unreservedly recommend his services to anyone considering any construction project in the Garden Route.

Just a short letter to say a big thank you for the lovely, quality home you have built for us. Working with you was as much a privilege as a pleasure, and we really appreciate the quality of workmanship and dedication to detail you bring to your work. For your interest, I have taken some pictures of the lounge area as well as others showing the setting and design of the cottage.

As this house was built on the management fee basis, I thought it may be useful, and perhaps informative to you and Holly, to give you some feedback on the process in general, as well as our experience with SQH during the construction phases of the house.

As indicated above, we feel we received real value for the money we had available to spend on the project. We built to a strict budget, and SQH managed to stay well within their original quoted price. In our view this is a considerable achievement, given the uncompromising high quality of materials used for all aspects of the building. This clearly reflects excellent site management and regular supervision of the many fine details of the building process.

The handling of our account with SQH was always done professionally and with transparency. The allocation of labour costs was also efficiently managed and SQH’s use of sub-contractors and suppliers went smoothly and without any delays. As the project developed we gained tremendous faith in the workmen SQH employs and without exception these workers were reliable, efficient and skilled.

Last but not least: the project was finished within the original projected time-frame. This despite the considerable additional earthmoving, compaction and filling-in which the project demanded. The digger-loader operator’s skill needs special mention: he is indeed a highly skilled professional. What a pleasure to see him handle that huge machine in small and narrow openings to protect and save the trees and bush we are so sensitive about!

The contract to construct our house in a modern, Tuscan style, with a pool on a very difficult site was handed over to Ronald Godfrey’s Company.

All the work, including the clearing and surveying of the plot, the layout of the house, as well as the planning, which included the procurement of the material, and all other work, was done by Ronald himself, independently.

We were very pleased with the execution, the quality and the final result of our entire home, including all financial matters. In addition we had a good personal relationship with Ronald. To a job well done, we would recommend Ronald any time.

Our house was built in 1998 by Mr Ron Godfrey (Sedge Quality Homes). As far as my knowledge goes it was one of the first houses built solo by Ron.

At the time that our house was being built we were living in Mpumalanga and had very few opportunities to visit the site.

This confirms that Ron Godfrey of Sedgefield Quality Homes built a house for me during 2000 in Caribbean Close, Cola Beach, Sedgefield, erf number 3646. For financial reasons I was forced to sell the house in 2003.

I still believe this is one of the finest houses in Cola Beach and I believe this is so because of the extra trouble Ron went to when building it. I had never met Ron prior to receiving his quote to build the house but, after giving him the contract to do so, I was never in doubt that I had stumbled upon the best builder in Sedgefield. Throughout the building operation which I project managed from Capetown, I found that Ron made sure everything was done according to my specification and that the quality of the workmanship was of the highest standard.

I believe the best recommendation for a builder is whether the house owner remains friendly with him after the building is complete. Ron and I are great friends and I recently attended his wedding to Holly. I would have no trouble in recommending Ron to anyone who requires a house built or alterations done.

This serves to confirm that we have, on numerous occasions, had reason to make use of the services of the above-mentioned contractor spanning the past four years.

We have made use of both the construction division to construct a sizable swimming pool and have hired their TLB (digger loader) with driver for excavation/earthmoving purposes and for the relocation of hundreds of trees around the 20ha property.

We have always found the above to be entirely reliable, punctual and the work done to be well supervised and without question. On no occasion did we find it necessary to either defer back to the contractor or have cause for any complaints!
